Autism-Focused SEN Teaching Assistant - Specialist School - Guildford GU5
Are you an experienced, patient and confident SEN Teaching Assistant with a strong background supporting children and young people with Autism?
We are recruiting for an Autism-Focused SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in the Guildford GU5 area, supporting pupils with Autism and a range of additional needs.
This role would suit someone who understands the importance of structure, consistency, communication and individualised support, and who can build strong relationships while helping pupils develop confidence and independence.
The Role
As an Autism-Focused SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:
Provide 1:1 and small-group support.
Support pupils inside and outside the classroom.
Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils.
Support communication, emotional regulation, social interaction and independence.
Use appropriate visual, sensory and structured learning strategies.
Support pupils who may experience sensory overload, anxiety or challenging behaviour.
Use positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies when required.
Follow individual learning, behaviour and support plans.
Encourage engagement, confidence and functional life skills.
Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, therapists and other professionals.
Monitor pupil progress, behaviour and wellbeing.
Help maintain a calm, safe and structured learning environment.
Who We're Looking For
The ideal candidate will have:
Strong experience supporting children or young people with Autism.
Experience within SEN schools, specialist provisions, autism settings or similar environments.
A good understanding of how Autism can affect communication, behaviour, sensory processing and learning.
Experience using visual supports, structured routines or sensory strategies.
Confidence supporting pupils with challenging or dysregulated behaviour.
A calm, patient and resilient approach.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
The ability to adapt support to individual needs.
Valid Child and Adult DBS essential.
Experience with PECS, Makaton, AAC or other communication strategies would be beneficial.
You don't necessarily need a formal teaching qualification. If you have strong hands-on Autism experience and are passionate about supporting pupils with additional needs, we'd like to hear from you.
