KS1 English Subject Lead

Location: Bolton Salary: MPS - UPS depending on experience.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Key Stage 1 teacher to take on the role of English Subject Lead. This is an exciting opportunity for a passionate educator to lead and develop the English curriculum across KS1, ensuring high standards of teaching and learning, and fostering a love of reading and writing in our pupils.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning

  • Deliver high-quality, engaging English lessons in line with the KS1 National Curriculum.
  • Model outstanding classroom practice and support colleagues in developing their own teaching.
  • Use assessment data effectively to plan and deliver targeted interventions and ensure progress for all learners.
  • Subject Leadership

  • Lead the strategic development of English across KS1, including phonics, reading, writing, and spoken language.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of English provision, including lesson observations, book looks, and pupil voice.
  • Develop and implement a clear action plan for English, aligned with whole-school priorities.
  • Support staff with planning, resources, and CPD to raise standards in English teaching and learning.
  • Curriculum & Assessment

  • Ensure the English curriculum is broad, balanced, inclusive, and meets the needs of all learners.
  • Oversee the implementation of a consistent phonics programme (e.g. Read Write Inc., Little Wandle).
  • Track pupil progress in English and report to SLT on attainment, progress, and areas for development.
  • Person Specification

    Essential:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Proven experience teaching in Key Stage 1
  • Strong knowledge of the KS1 English curriculum and phonics
  • Excellent classroom practitioner with high expectations for all learners
  • Ability to lead, inspire, and support colleagues
  • Desirable:

  • Previous experience in a subject leadership role
  • Experience with phonics leadership or training
  • Evidence of recent CPD in English or leadership (e.g. NPQML)
  • Experience working with external partners (e.g. English Hubs, local authorities)
