Academic Support Assistant
1:1 English & Literacy Support (Behaviour & Intervention Focus) 11-16 Secondary School - Middlesbrough Start Date: May Half Term Contract: Long‑term Temporary Pay: Competitive daily rate (dependent on experience)
We are recruiting an Academic Support Assistant to deliver 1:1 English and Literacy support within an 11-16 secondary school in Middlesbrough, with a strong behaviour and intervention focus.
This long‑term temporary role is starting ASAP and is ideal for someone confident supporting students who may present with challenging behaviour, low engagement or barriers to learning, alongside literacy gaps.
The Role
As an Academic Support Assistant, you will:
- Provide 1:1 English and literacy intervention across KS3 and KS4
- Support pupils with reading, writing, spelling and comprehension
- Work with students who may display challenging behaviour or disengagement
- Deliver targeted literacy and catch‑up programmes
- Support learners where English is not their first language (EAL)
- Help students access learning by breaking tasks down clearly and calmly
- Reinforce positive behaviour, routines and expectations
- Work closely with English teachers, SEND and pastoral teams
- Build confidence, resilience and positive learning behaviours
We're Looking For:
- Experience supporting secondary‑aged pupils with English and literacy
- Experience working with learners with behavioural needs or intervention support
- Experience supporting students where English is an additional language (highly desirable)
- Strong communication and relationship‑building skills
- Background in schools, alternative provision, tutoring, EAL or SEN settings welcomed
- Availability to start May Half Term
Safeguarding:
- An enhanced DBS on the Update Service is required (we can support if needed)
- If not currently on the Update Service, full support can be provided to obtain one
