Mental Health Teaching Assistant
Veritas Education is currently seeking a compassionate and dedicated Mental Health Teaching Assistant to join our team and support students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) challenges in the South Sheffield area. We have several part-time and full-time roles available.
The Role:
As a Mental Health Teaching Assistant, you will be working closely with the class teacher to provide tailored support for students with trauma and SEMH needs. Your responsibilities will include:
- Supporting a class of 6-10 pupils, assisting the teacher in delivering quality education and emotional support.
- Helping the teacher plan and deliver personalised learning activities, with a focus on mental health and emotional well-being.
- Providing 1:1 and small group support to students, using a trauma-informed approach to meet their individual needs.
- Supporting pupils in building essential social, emotional, and communication skills, helping them develop resilience and effective coping strategies.
- Monitoring and reporting on students' progress, particularly in emotional and behavioural development, to inform teaching strategies.
- Assisting with managing classroom behaviour to ensure a safe and supportive environment for students with trauma and emotional challenges.
Ideal Candidate:
- Experience working with children with Special Educational Needs (SEN), particularly those who have experienced trauma or have mental health challenges. (Experience in an educational setting is preferred but not essential).
- A strong understanding of trauma-informed care and mental health issues in children.
- Patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm and composed in challenging situations.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students and colleagues.
- The skills to manage challenging behaviour using appropriate strategies tailored to emotional and mental health needs.
- The ability to respond to and support students' emotional and physical reactions effectively.

- Two satisfactory references.
- Experience working with children or adults with Special Educational Needs or mental health challenges.
