Role Overview
We are seeking a creative, enthusiastic, and dedicated Performing Arts / Drama Teacher to join a specialist SEN provision in Darwen, Blackburn. Working with students aged 13 and above, you will deliver engaging, practical, and inclusive Performing Arts lessons that inspire creativity, encourage self-expression, build confidence, and develop communication and social skills.
The successful candidate will have a genuine passion for Drama and the Performing Arts and understand the positive impact creative education can have on young people with additional needs. You will adapt lessons and performance activities to meet the diverse needs of learners, creating a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where every student is encouraged to participate, achieve, and thrive.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver differentiated Drama and Performing Arts lessons tailored to students' individual learning needs
- Adapt teaching strategies and creative activities to support students with a range of SEN, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and sensory needs
- Use drama, role play, improvisation, movement, performance, and creative storytelling to engage students and develop confidence
- Create a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment where students feel comfortable expressing themselves
- Support students in achieving their EHCP targets and personalised learning outcomes
- Develop students' communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, self-confidence, and independence through Performing Arts
- Prepare and support students to participate in performances, showcases, productions, and other creative opportunities
- Assess, monitor, and report on student progress, celebrating individual achievements and personal development
- Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants, the SENCO, therapists, and external professionals to provide holistic support
- Encourage participation from students who may experience anxiety, low confidence, or barriers to traditional classroom learning
- Use positive and nurturing behaviour management strategies to promote engagement and participation
- Ensure all rehearsals, performances, activities, and equipment are managed safely and in accordance with relevant requirements
Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS/QTLS) (essential)
- Experience teaching Drama, Performing Arts, Theatre Studies, or a related subject at secondary level
- Previous experience working with students with Special Educational Needs is desirable
- Strong understanding of a range of additional needs, including ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and sensory processing differences
- A genuine passion for Drama and the Performing Arts and their role in supporting young people's development
- Ability to adapt lessons and activities to meet varying abilities, learning styles, communication needs, and levels of confidence
- Excellent classroom management and behaviour support skills
- A patient, nurturing, creative, and flexible approach to teaching
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
