Veritas Education is seeking an experienced Behaviour Mentor & Learning Support Assistant to work in a dedicated Behaviour Unit within a mainstream primary school in Deptford, Lewisham. The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced team to provide tailored support for children exhibiting challenging behaviours and support their learning and emotional needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with experience in behavioural management, de-escalation techniques, and positive handling to make a real difference in the lives of primary-aged children. You will play an essential role in supporting both the emotional and educational development of children in the Behaviour Unit, helping them re-engage with school life and develop important social and academic skills.

  • Use your expertise in behavioural management to implement de-escalation techniques and provide positive handling strategies when necessary.
  • Work closely with the teaching staff to ensure consistent approaches to managing behaviour and promoting positive outcomes for all children.
  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to children with complex emotional or behavioural needs.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of individualized behaviour plans and learning programs.
  • Support students during class activities and provide guidance in maintaining focus and engagement.
  • Monitor and record students' progress and behaviour, reporting any issues or concerns to senior staff members.
  • Promote an inclusive environment where all children are supported, regardless of their challenges.
  • Be a positive role model, demonstrating patience, understanding, and effective communication techniques.
  • Assist with physical intervention in line with the school's policies, ensuring safety and dignity for all students.
  • The Ideal Candidate:

  • Proven experience in supporting children with behavioural needs, ideally within a special educational needs or behaviour unit environment.
  • Strong knowledge of de-escalation techniques and positive handling strategies.
  • Experience with physical intervention techniques and the ability to manage challenging behaviours effectively and safely.
  • A calm, empathetic, and resilient approach to working with children in challenging situations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • A positive attitude toward working with children with a range of learning, emotional, and behavioural needs.
  • The ability to be flexible and adapt to changing circumstances as needed.
  • Experience in a school environment is desirable but not essential.
  • A passion for making a positive impact on the lives of young learners.
  • Why Join This School?

  • A supportive and collaborative working environment.
  • Opportunities for professional development and training in behavioural management techniques.
  • Working with a dedicated team focused on improving outcomes for children with additional behavioural and learning needs.
  • Competitive salary and excellent benefits package.
  • A rewarding role that offers the chance to make a tangible difference in the lives of children.
