Social Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) Teaching Assistant

Location: Braford, West Yorkshire

Contract Type: Temporary, Term Time Only (Full time)

Daily Rate: £85-£100 a day.

Veritas Education are currently working with an Alternative Provision in Bradford who are searching for SEMH Teaching Assistants to support students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and challenging behaviours.

As a SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will show a real passion for supporting learners and young adults with various challenging behaviours, this could be down to consistent disruption in class, risk of absconding, struggles with social interactions and general day to day behaviour around the setting. You will be able to demonstrate a level of resilience in work, be able to think on your feet and act/respond quickly to challenging behaviour, but most importantly be able to build meaningful and nurturing relationships with the students to help support them when they are going into crisis.

You will be able to demonstrate and implement behaviour management techniques both inside the classroom and around the educational setting, to help promote learner growth and development throughout their school day within a safe and structure learning environment.

In this role, you will work alongside Teachers, SEN Teaching Assistants and Behaviour Support Workers to support the learners in a constructive and controlled learning environment, both inside the classroom and around the setting. The successful candidate must comfortable supporting children in crisis, dealing with challenging situations and potentially volatile behaviour.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with SEMH needs.
  • Assist in the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and external agencies to support the holistic development of students.
  • Monitor and track the progress of students, providing feedback to the teaching staff.
  • Be confident with behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
  • Have good knowledge of the National Curriculum to support students with their learning.
  • An optimistic outlook and determination to make a difference to children's education.
  • Requirements:

  • Relevant experience working with students or adults with SEMH needs is essential.
  • Level 2 Team Teach is essential, although training can be offered by Veritas.
  • Understanding of different learning styles and strategies to support diverse needs.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing situations.
  • Relevant qualifications in education or special education are desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of SEN is essential.
  • Strong communication, empathy, and patience are crucial. The ability to handle challenging situations with calm and professionalism is a must.
  • Willingness to adapt to the varying needs of students and the school environment.
  • A moving and handling qualification is preferred.
  • Candidates must hold or be willing to apply for an enhanced DBS upon registration.
  • Have proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
